Blanks by Matt West
All bamboo blanks are made to order.
Allow 8 weeks for West blanks. |
|

Matt West is our graphic designer, but we originally got to know him
through the business of bamboo rods. He has been making his own blanks and rods since 1998,
so he knows the ropes. Matt learned on his own, but when credit is due,
he cites Russ Gooding and Mike Clark as the two professionals who have helped him most along the way. We do not keep Matt’s blanks in stock; orders are custom. Blanks can be done in any color or flame you choose,
to any weight, length or action.
All Matt West blanks are ferruled with GW Field Grade Ferrules (unless others are
requested), oil finished, and come with a rod tube and
flannel rod sack.
Allow 8 weeks for delivery.

Our kits are designed
to help you jump the
hurdle toward making
your first bamboo rod,
but they also represent
an incredible value for
those experienced rod
builders looking to get everything they need
in one shebang. The prices are outstanding.
The components in each kit are high-quality,
name-brand components. Rest assured,
when you order our kits, you are ordering
some of the finest components made.
Each
cane rod kit comes with a classic rod taper—
those essential numbers—as well as all the
components you need to make the rod and
make it well. Each component set includes
one 6’ section of our A grade Tonkin (raw
cane, NOT a blank), a reel seat, a grip, three
winding checks (the “right” one, plus one upand
one down-sized check so that you never
have to worry about whether or not you hit
the blank specs precisely), a hook tender, two
spools of silk thread, a ferrule set, a stripping
guide, snakes and a tip top to fit the rod “on
spec,” plus a spare that is one size up. Unless
otherwise noted, all these kits are for twopiece,
one-tip rods.
We pre-package these kits,
so please understand that there can be no
substitutions of components. Also, for U.S.
rodmakers, we offer a sample pack of bamboo
priced so that you have no qualms about
ordering cane—get some and get splitting!

|
| With each kit, you will wind up with two extra winding checks and a spare tip top. Save these for future rods; they’re sure to come in handy. In addition to the
kits, you’ll need basic bamboo blank making tools, adhesives, and finishes. We’ll be glad to point you in the right direction. Whether you’re just starting or you
want to try a new rod while getting a break on components, you’ll have fun making our kits into great rods! |
Note: Our rodmaking kits DO NOT come with a finished blank! We provide a raw culm
of
bamboo that must be split, planed, glued and ferruled into a finished blank.

The Midge 6’3” for 3 or 4 Weight
Based on the famous taper by Paul Young, this little rod will delight you if you prefer small streams and small flies.
This kit includes a 6’ section of A grade Tonkin Cane, a GW Unusually Traditional reel seat, an ACW cigar grip,
a half-set of Field Grade ferrules, three winding checks, a hook tender, a TiCH stripping guide, six black snakes,
two black tip tops, one spool of C/T #038 size #50 Aubergine (dark maroon) silk thread for the primary wraps,
and one spool of Pearsall’s Gossamer Black silk for tipping the wraps, as well as a sack.
MIDGE-K $170.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
The 7012 7’ For 4 Weight
This is perhaps the perfect 4 weight, but then I’m partial to tapers based on Lyle Dickerson’s work. In this taper you’ve got a solid four weight with enough length to allow you some reach on mid-sized streams. This kit includes a 6’ section of A grade Tonkin Cane, a GW Unusually Traditional reel seat, a cigar grip, a half-set of Field Grade
ferrules, three winding checks, a hook tender, a TiCH stripping guide, seven black snakes, two black tip tops, one
spool of C/T #074 size #50 Harvest Gold silk thread for the primary wraps and one spool of Pearsall’s Gossamer
Black silk for tipping the wraps, as well as a sack.
7012-K $185.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
The 7613 LT 7’6” for 5 Weight
Here’s my favorite taper. Based on Lyle Dickerson’s 7613, this taper retains the original tip, but features a mildly reduced butt section that makes for sweeter casting at less than large river distances and/or in less than blasting
winds. In other words, I’ve found that the original taper, while great for Susquehanna smallmouth bass fishing,
was overkill for most trout angling. This kit includes a 6’ section of A grade Tonkin Cane, a GW Unusually
Traditional reel seat, an ACW reverse half wells grip, a half-set of Field Grade ferrules, three winding checks, a
hook tender, an Agatine stripping guide, eight TiCH snakes, two TiCH tip tops, one spool of C/T #116 size #50
Nutmeg silk thread and one spool of Pearsall’s Gossamer Black silk, as well as a sack.
7613-K $220.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
The 102 8’ for 4/5 Weight
If you’ve always wanted to try a classic taper derived from the rods of E.F. Payne, here’s your chance. This kit, with its reproduction hardware, will have appeal even if you’re a practiced rodmaker. In fact, given its reliance on stepdown ferrules, I suggest making at least one other rod before tackling this one. When you’re ready, here’s what this kit offers: a full A grade culm of Tonkin cane (that’s 2x 6’ sections - plenty of material to make a two-tip rod), our Payne-Inspired reproduction cap & ring reel seat with a Spanish Cedar insert (as per the original rod specs), an ACW half-wells grip, a full set of Payne-style reproduction ferrules, three HexChexs, a ring & saddle hook tender, a low frame agate stripping guide, fourteen black snakes, four black tip tops (two pairs in two sizes), two spools of Pearsall’s Naples Java Brown silk, as well as a sack.
102-K $270.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
The F.E. Thomas 6’8” for 3 or 4 Weight
This taper has become a favorite with our rod clients. Michael C. Simon, has been running around the east coast
with demo version of this rod in hand—the one he used as a model for the 2003 catalog cover painting. This kit
includes a 6’ section of A grade Tonkin Cane, a GW Unusually Traditional reel seat, an ACW reverse half wells
grip, a half-set of Field Grade ferrules, three winding checks, a hook tender, a low frame agate stripping guide,
seven TiCH snakes, two TiCH tip tops, one spool of YLI #256 (rusted burgundy) size #100 silk thread for the
primary wraps and one spool of Pearsall’s Gossamer Black silk for tipping the wraps, as well as a sack.
FET68-K $209.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
The Golden Witch Cricket One-Piece 5’6” for 3 or 4 Weight
If you happen to have seen our web site or our rod catalog, you may know about the Ed Shenk Cricket. To say
the least, this is a fun rod that has received good press in the past year. Now you can make one in your own
shop. This kit includes a 6’ section of cane (use a 3/3 node pattern when staggering) which allows you to make
a 5’6” one-piece rod. The other components include a GW Unusually Traditional reel seat, a reverse half wells
grip, three GW Broad Winding Checks, YLI #50 Vivid Yellow Silk plus a spool of Pearsall’s Gossamer in Black
for tipping, a low frame agate stripper, six light wire TiCH snakes, two light wire TiCH tip tops and a sack (slide an
un-used strip of cane into the extra slot in the Cricket sack to stiffen it and thus protect the tip of the rod).
CRCKT-K $209.00 plus $24.95 S/H/I in US
